Career development and science diplomacy

Another inspiring meeting of the Raising Managers Academy (RMA) is behind us. This time focused on leadership, career development and diplomacy in science. Trainees had the unique opportunity to engage in open dialogue and knowledge exchange with two exceptional scientific leaders: professor Monika Kaczmarek, director general of the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research PAS, and professor Mariusz Piskuła, a former long-time director of the Institute.

Day 1: Career Development in Practice

The first day of RMA was led by Prof. Monika Kaczmarek – current director general of the Institute, head of the Programming of Fertility and Development Research Group and long-time leader of Molecular Biology Laboratory, one of Institute’s core facilities.

Prof. Kaczmarek’s workshop “Career Development in Practice”, offered an insightful look into the real-world challenges and opportunities of building an academic career. Through a mix of interactive sessions and collaborative exercises, participants explored topics such as scientific motivation, leadership potential, and self-perception as future leaders. The meeting encouraged reflection on personal leadership styles and helped aspiring research managers define their own path forward in

Day 2: Science Diplomacy

The second day began with a meeting with Prof. Mariusz Piskuła, an internationally recognized expert in the field of food and health, and an experienced coordinator of prestigious scientific projects. Over the course of more than 13 years, he served as director general of the Institute.

During his presentation, Prof. Piskuła explored science diplomacy, drawing on decades of experience blending research, leadership, and strategic negotiations. He emphasized that leading a major scientific institution requires more than managing research—it demands strong diplomatic skills. These skills are crucial for fostering collaboration within academia and engaging policymakers, international partners, and diverse global stakeholders.

Special guest

A special guest of the session was Prof. Andrzej Babuchowski – leading expert in dairy science and agricultural policy. He currently serves as President of the Institute of Innovation for the Dairy Industry. With experience as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Poland’s representative to EU agricultural bodies, he offered valuable insights into the role of science diplomacy at the intersection of science, policy, and industry. institutions. His perspective shed light on the interface between science, policy, and industry. Prof. Babuchowski is also a member of the Advisory Board of WELCOME2 project that powers Raising Managers Academy in @InLife.
