Science behind visual presentations

How can scientists design graphics and slides that are clear, engaging, and memorable for their audiences? Researchers explored this question during the latest workshop held on 13-14 November as part of the Raising Managers Academy (RMA) series at the Institute.

The training was led by Tomasz Jeliński, Chief Specialist at the Communications & International Affairs Office of the Institute, who supported scientists in communicating their research effectively-both within the scientific community and beyond.

The goal of the workshop was to show how to apply principles of cognitive psychology and good visual design to create compelling scientific presentations. Participants learned how to reduce cognitive load, build a clear visual hierarchy, choose colours and typography consciously, and avoid text-heavy or overloaded slides.

The workshop had a distinctly practical character.

Participants improved their own scientific graphics and slide layouts, working with free online tools to create illustrations, infographics, icons, charts, and visual data presentations. Step by step, they transformed their presentations into clear, reader-friendly visuals that enhanced the impact of their scientific message.

– Visual communication plays a crucial role in research. Well-designed visuals help audiences understand key findings more easily, remember them better, and identify the main conclusions faster. This significantly increases the reach and influence of scientific work. – emphasised Tomasz Jeliński

The next RMA workshop will take place4-5 December 2025 as the series continues to support young research leaders in developing essential skills for effective science communication and management.
