Work–life balance in the work of a scientist

How to maintain a healthy balance between professional and personal life? How can we avoid bringing work-related stress into our homes? And finally – how can we effectively organize a remote workspace in the comfort of our home? These were just some of the questions explored by participants of the third Raising Managers Academy workshop held this year. This time, the sessions were led by Maciej Cieślik, an experienced trainer specializing in leadership and human resource management.

During the workshop “Balancing Work and Life”, the facilitator encouraged participants to reflect on how to build a personalized balance between time devoted to work, rest, and quality sleep. He emphasized that these proportions should be tailored to each individual’s needs – including how we divide our time after work: between relationships with loved ones and moments dedicated solely to ourselves.

– We still struggle to accept the fact that a day has only 24 hours, and each hour has just 60 minutes. We should treat our day as a minute-budget: roughly one-third for work, one-third for personal life, and one-third for sleep. Unfortunately, we often exceed these proportions, which leads to accumulating a time debt that eventually has to be repaid – noted Maciej Cieślik.

Workshop participants learned, among other things, how to plan a holistic calendar, what to avoid during vacations, and how to reduce phone dependency. A valuable source of inspiration turned out to be Generation Z, which is becoming increasingly adept at personalizing how they work and relax. The next Raising Managers Academy workshop will take place in June. The topic of the upcoming session: “Project Management for Scientists“.
