OPEN SEMINAR WITH PROF. LARS-OLIVER KLOTZ – 15 MARCH 2023

On 15 March 2023, the Division of Food Science of the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences welcomed Lars-Oliver Klotz, Professor of Nutrigenomics at the Institute of Nutritional Sciences at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany. Prof. Klotz conducts research in biochemistry and molecular biology, molecular toxicology and cell biology.

Prof. Klotz gave a guest lecture on ‘Selenium-binding proteins: from SNP to function’, with which he inaugurated an open international seminar series as part of the Welcoming ERA Chair to Centre of Excellence in Nutrigenomics to optimise health and well-being project.

The presentation summarized the work on SELENBP1 performed in the Klotz lab regarding the enzymatic activity of SELENBP1, the role of selenium, the role of transition metal ions and the search for a function of this protein, using isolated SELENBP1 mutants, cell culture models and a model organism, Caenorhabditis elegans.

First international seminar was attended by scientists and PhD students from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn and other academics. After the presentation, there were many questions from the audience and an interesting discussion ensued. The meeting with Prof. Klotz was also an opportunity to exchange experiences or discuss potential areas of scientific collaboration.
