Mariusz Jankowski joins the WELCOME2 team and takes the position of a PhD student in Prof. Carsten Carlberg’s nutrigenomics group.
What is the focus of your research?
Main focus of my research is analysis of sequencing data. For the purpose of my master’s thesis I worked on RNA-seq data from Zander samples with particular focus on the analysis of long non-coding RNAs and their interactions with protein-coding genes. Outside of that I also have knowledge and experience in working with DNA-seq data.
What organizations/institutions have you studied or worked in?
In 2022 I graduated in animal molecular biotechnology at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. During the previous year I worked for OncoCDx company where I was responsible for the development of a pipeline to process nanopore sequencing data from lung cancer samples in order to find mutations that determine our susceptibility to biomarker directed therapies.
What do you consider the greatest achievement in your career so far?
I got an award for my master’s thesis from the University. I put a lot of work into it, so I was really happy that it turned out to be great.
What was your motivation to join WELCOME2 team?
The project felt like a great opportunity because it fits my scientific interest and allows me to work and further improve in the field of bioinformatic. Moreover the results of the project will likely provide new insights into appropriate healthy lifestyle choices.
What are your research goals to pursue in the near future?
I wish to learn as much as I can under the guidance of professor Carlberg. I wish to further develop in the field of bioinformatics, and translate my skills into something of a potential use to society.
What are your outside of work interests?
I listen to a lot of music, particularly many subgenres of metal and hard rock. I love daily walks in forested areas. I also enjoy playing video games, especially RPGs.
